Plan to construct housing societies for slum-dwellers

Dwellers of 15,000 jhuggis from 41 such colonies to benefit


  • Four of the 41 societies have already been registered
  • Each society having 150 to 200 flats would be built by DSIDC

    NEW DELHI: Under the scheme to rehabilitate people living in slums and jhuggi-jhonpri colonies of the Capital, the Delhi Government has decided to constitute multi-purpose housing societies, Revenue and Development Minister Rajkumar Chauhan announced here on Thursday.

    Mr. Chauhan told media persons that the Government would re-settle dwellers of 15,000 jhuggis from 41 slums and JJ colonies of the Capital.

    Mr. Chauhan informed that four of the 41 societies have already been registered. The four societies are: Indira Slum Basti (Kriti Nagar), Chanakya Slum Basti, Ashoka Slum Basti (Chanakyapuri) and Maharishi Valmiki Slum Basti near Indian Express Building. These societies will be registered on special basis and every society will have 30 members. Later, the number of the member could be increased.

    The Development Minister pointed out that every society would have 150 to 200 flats, which would be built by the Delhi State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation.

    The cost of one flat would be about Rs. 1,55,000. The flats will be built with the best of technology and material.

    The flats will be built on an area of 250 square feet.

    Mr. Chauhan said that besides an assistance of Rs. 40,000 by the Union Government under the Valmiki Housing Scheme, the Government of Delhi would provide Rs 15,000 to each family to purchase the flats.

    The allottee will have to pay Rs 10,000 and the rest of the amount will be provided in easy instalments.

    The Minister further informed that a six-member committee has also been constituted to monitor the process of these proposed societies. Deep Chand Sharma, Chairman of the Delhi Cooperative Housing Finance Society, will chair the six-member Committee.

    The other members are: Vijay Lochav, MLA; M.L. Khurana, Managing Director of National Cooperative Housing Federation; P.M. Sharma, Secretary, Delhi Cooperative Union; Deputy Commissioner of J.J. Department, Municipal Corporation of Delhi; and Joint Registrar of Delhi Cooperative Society. The Committee will update the Minister on the progress of the multi-purpose housing societies.
