34 developmental schemes approved

New projects to cost Rs. 9000 crores

NEW DELHI: The Delhi Government's Steering Committee on Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) has approved 34 schemes amounting to Rs.9,000 crores and also a comprehensive City Development Plan to be forwarded to the Union Ministry of Urban Development for its approval.

This decision was taken at a meeting presided over by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and attended by Urban Development Minister A.K. Walia, East Delhi MP Sandeep Dikshit, Chief Secretary R. Narayanswami and heads of various Departments.

It has taken the Delhi Government more than a year and repeated reminders by the Union Urban Development Ministry to finalise the schemes and programmes under JNNURM while other State Governments had submitted their proposals months ago.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had on November 14 last year launched the JNNURM. This scheme entails substantial investment of funds in city infrastructure within a period of seven years starting from 2005-06 covering initially 63 cities including Delhi with an expenditure of Rs.1.25 lakh crores.

During the meeting, the Chief Minister stressed the need for ensuring uniform coverage and cost for the flats to be constructed by the different agencies. It was also decided to have detailed discussions on Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) before signing of MoUs.

The 34 projects amounting to Rs. 9,000 crores include six by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, six by the Delhi Jal Board, 20 by the Public Works Department and one each by the Delhi State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (DSIIDC), Delhi Development Authority and Slum and JJ Department. The MCD projects short-listed by the Steering Committee include corridor improvement of Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Marg (Rs. 75.16 crores), construction of grade separator along Rani Jhansi Road between Baraf Khana Chowk and Bara Hindu Rao Chowk (Rs. 177.72 crores); corridor improvement plan for Mehrauli-Gurgaon Road connecting Andheria More to Delhi-Haryana border (Rs. 173.75 crores); traffic management plan for areas around proposed civic centre near Minto Road (Rs. 187.71 crores); construction of a bridge at Samaipur Badli level crossing on Auchandi Road (Rs. 40 crores); and redevelopment of surroundings of Jama Masjid (Rs. 234 crores).

The Jal Board projects include rehabilitation of trunk sewer (Rs. 370 crores); laying of twin raw water main from Haiderpur water treatment plant to Wazirabad water treatment plant (Rs. 186.57 crores); 20 MGD water treatment plant at Okhla (Rs. 137crores); eight MGD process waste water recycling plant at Chandrawal water works (Rs. 20 crores); construction of 21 UGRs in Delhi (Rs. 250 crores); and construction of 40 MGD water treatment plant at Dwarka (Rs. 364.27 crores). Apart from this a project relating to construction of interceptor sewer system for cleaning the river Yamuna at an estimated cost of Rs. 4, 000 crores was also cleared.

The PWD projects include construction of grade separator at Mukarba Chowk; grade separator at Azadpur; flyover at Neela Hauz; flyover at Naraina T-junction; underpass and two foot over bridges at Outer Ring Road, Jwala Heri-Behra Enclave; grade separator at Mangolpuri; construction of flyovers at Africa Avenue and Aruna Asaf Ali Road.
