Crushed by bus

NEW DELHI: Subodh Kumar, an intern with the AIIMS here, was run over and killed by a Blueline bus at Sarojini Nagar on Thursday. The mishap took place at 2-30 p.m. when Subodh was standing at a bus stop on Ring Road near Safdarjung Hospital when the speeding bus knocked him down. He was rushed to Safdarjung Hospital where he was declared brought dead. The bus driver, Surjeet Singh, has been arrested and a case of rash and negligent driving registered.

`Extortionist' held

NEW DELHI: An alleged extortionist, Subhash Kumar, who posed as an official of the power distribution company BSES and extorted money from consumers by threatening to impose penalty on them has been arrested by the East Delhi police. Acting on a complaint by Ram Pratap Verma that a man had extorted Rs. 5,000 from him by posing as a BSES official, the police team laid a trap and arrested the accused at Jhilmil Colony. Two different identity cards bearing photographs of the accused have been recovered from his possession, the police said.

Arrested for thefts

NEW DELHI: A gang allegedly involved in theft of electric transformers has been smashed at Najafgarh in West Delhi by the Crime Branch. The police claim to have recovered 20 transformers and copper material and tools worth over Rs. 15 lakhs from their possession. The accused -- Ram Parvesh, Lekhraj and Ram Sumiran -- used to survey the area for new electric transformers during the day and then steal them at night. Anil Tiwari and Narain Garg, who used to buy the stolen transformers, have also been arrested.

Four held for robbery

NEW DELHI: Four persons have been arrested by the Special Staff of the Central Delhi police on charges of involvement in cases of robbery and picking pockets. Acting on a tip-off that some criminals had gathered at Shivaji Park near Minto Bridge, the police mounted a raid and arrested four of them. They were identified as Swarn Singh, Shakil Alam, Sonu and Shankar. Fifth culprit Sikandar Ali managed to escape.

Phone thieves nabbed

NEW DELHI: Three persons allegedly involved in cases of mobile phone theft have been arrested by the Kalkaji police. The police claim to have recovered six stolen mobile phones from them.

The police arrested one of the accused, Suraj and at his instance, two of his accomplices, Ajay and Abid, were also arrested.
