Shenzen in semifinals

KOLKATA: Shenzen FC from China, comprising mostly teenaged boys, defeated Mohammedan Sporting 1-0 in a group B league match and qualified for the semifinals of the 112th IFA Shield football tournament here at the Salt Lake Stadium on Friday.

Mohammedan Sporting, which drew with Mohun Bagan in the tournament's opening game, will be out of the championship unless the Chinese beat Mohun Bagan by a margin of 2 goals above.

The match-clincher was scored by the promising striker Ma Xiao Lei. The 19-year-old, who played for China in the under-15 and 17 age group tournaments, pounced on a right-wing pass, sprinted into the box and unleashed a shot which rolled across the Mohammedan Sporting goalmouth and into the net. — Special Correspondent
