Man kills wife, son and self

VIRUDHUNAGAR: A man killed his wife and his two-year-old son, and committed suicide here on Thursday night.

The police said R. Sivakumar, who ran a travel agency here, threw himself before the Tuticorin-Chennai Pearl City Express near Allampatti railway crossing at around 10 p.m. Later, it was found that his wife S. Akiladevi and son Sandeep were missing.

The police launched a search and found the bodies along the Madurai-Virudhungar Highway early on Friday. While the woman was stabbed on the neck, the son's throat was slit. Domestic quarrel is suspected to be the reason. — Staff Reporter

3 killed, 9 injured in accident

DINDIGUL: Three persons were killed on the spot, and nine others injured, when their van collided head on with a Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation bus at Kodai Road junction near here on Friday.

The deceased were identified as S. Malaisay (28) of Perumalpatti, van driver Soundarapandi (22) of Uthappanaickanur and C. Karmegam (26) of Nalla Ammapatti near Usilampatti. The injured were admitted to a private hospital at Dindigul.

The roof and front portion of the van were ripped apart and one of the seats was thrown out of the van in the impact of collision. The front and rear portions of the van and its windowpanes were smashed. Nobody in the bus was injured.

The occupants of the van were on their way to Ammainaickanur from Kodai Road to attend a marriage. — Staff Reporter

10 workers injured as mandapam collapses

CUDDALORE: Ten construction workers sustained injuries when a mandapam under construction at the entrance of the Sri Devanatha Swamy Temple at Thiruvahindrapuram near here collapsed on Friday. The injured were identified as Perumal (40), Dakshinamurthy (35), Suresh (28), Rajagopal (30), Chandran (38), Sakthivel (22), Manikandan (21), Veeramani (25), Sathya (18) and Selvi (18).

They were admitted to headquarters government hospital here. District Collector Gagandeep Singh Bedi visited the injured in the hospital. — Special Correspondent

Tourist train

CHENNAI: The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) will operate a Bharat Darshan tourist train to Hyderabad-Ramoji Film City-Golkonda-Aurangabad-Ellora-Ajanta-Mumbai-Elephanta-Goa.

The exclusive holiday special will depart from Madurai on December 23 via Dindigul, Tiruchi, Villupuram, Chennai, Egmore, where tourists can board it. The cost of the 11-day package is Rs. 5,770 inclusive of taxes.

Youth kills mother, commits suicide

ERODE: A youth on Thursday killed his mother and committed suicide at Goundenpalayam in the Modakurichi Police Station limits. The police said that Paramasivam, a bachelor, in a fit of rage attacked his mother, Palaniammal (65), with a crowbar and strangulated her to death as she did not allow him to venture out taking instructions from astrologers.

On hearing screams, his father tried to intervene but he was beaten up by the youth. He fled from the scene and immediately alerted his neighbours. But they could not rescue Palaniammal or Paramasivam.

Rangasamy has been admitted to a hospital.

ERODE: Booking of parcels that has been temporarily suspended resumed at railway station and lorry transport offices.

Assumes office

Tuticorin: G. Narayana Moorthy assumed charge as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Tamilnad Mercantile Bank Limited recently.

A release said the Reserve bank of India ratified his appointment for a period of two years.

Mr. Moorthy had served Canara Bank for 30 years in various positions and was the General Manager and Chief Vigilance Officer of Indian Overseas Bank for five years, prior to the present appointment.

Lottery tickets seized, one held

Tuticorin: The police seized 2,775 lottery tickets from the town and arrested Balakrishnan (41) in this connection recently.

He was picked up from near the vegetable market in the town by a special team headed by Sub-Inspector Sukadevi and remanded to judicial custody under the Lottery Regulation Act.

One killed in road accident

Kumbakonam: Chinnathambi alias Vijayakumar (15) was killed and eight others including two school children injured when a school van and a mini lorry collied in Kumbakonam on Friday.

Three injured were admitted to Thanjavur Medical College hospital and five at Kumbakonam Government Hospital.

Electoral roll work

PERAMBALUR: Collector Anil Meshram on Thursday reviewed the work on preparing photo electoral roll in the five Assembly segments in the district.

He inspected the process in Vayalapadi village in Varahur Assembly segment. About 85 per cent of the voters had been issued Elector's Photo Identity Card (EPIC).

Flag Day

PERAMBALUR: Collector Anil Meshram on Thursday inaugurated the Flag Day collection.

He said a target of Rs. 9.50 lakh has been fixed for the current year.

Last year, the achievement was Rs. 8.90 lakh.

A total of 248 ex-servicemen got assistance to the tune of Rs.17.40 lakh last year, a press release added.

Citizen forum's plea

KARAIKAL: The Karaikal District Citizens Welfare Association in the Union Territory of Puducherry, has urged the Collector to take steps for taking photos of voters at their houses for issue of Elector's Photo Identity Cards (EPICs).

The Association, in a memorandum on Friday stated that the voters were facing hardship and inordinate delay was caused in taking photos at the Karaikal taluk office.

Collector's directive to officials

NAGAPATTINAM: Collector Tenkasi S. Jawahar instructed all the department officials to provide information to the people under the `Right to Information Act'.

Addressing a meeting convened by the Tamil Nadu Consumer Protection Council here, he said there was a delay in a few cases.

Mettur level

TIRUCHI: The water level in the Mettur dam stood at 112.48 feet against the full level of 120 feet, on Friday. The inflow was 4,582 cusecs and the discharge, 15,000 cusecs. — Staff Reporter
