Christians plan protest over church murder

Staff Reporter

"We feel that some outfits are bent upon disturbing peace"

CHENNAI : Christians have planned to take out a rally from the Christu Jothi Church in Ramapuram followed by a meeting to condemn the brutal murder of church employee Jacob in St Thomas Church on November 26.

Addressing a press conference here on Friday, Archbishop of Madras - Mylapore, A M Chinnappa and Chingelput Archbishop A Neethinathan said that though the accused in the case was arrested and remanded to judicial custody, they did not believe that he was "psychologically disturbed" as reported in the media quoting the police.

They said the arrested youth — Ramesh Kumar — was an engineer from a reputed institution and had worked abroad for several years.

He had created his own website. When such was the position, the claim that he was mentally deranged or unwell could not be accepted.

Under such circumstances, "we appeal to the government to appoint a panel of doctors and examine the accused thoroughly. The St Thomas Church is a divine and historic place and cannot be claimed by any other persons or organisations.

We feel that some outfits are bent upon disturbing peace and communal harmony in society and had planned an attack on the minorities.

The police should probe and thwart the designs of such anti-social forces, they appealed. The rally followed by a meeting would be held on Sunday at St. Thomas Mount.
