CHENNAI : Unidentified miscreants hurled bottles filled with acid and petrol at the Ayodhya Mandapam, West Mambalam and attacked two persons on Friday.

Police said that at around 3 p.m. two persons came in an auto rickshaw and hurled a few bottles filled with petrol and acid at the mandapam. Within minutes, another auto rickshaw arrived at the scene with five to seven persons, who raised slogans hailing Periyar and attacked two persons in the vicinity before fleeing.

Police identified the injured as Subramani alias Dhandapani (55) of Valliamman Koil Street, who sells sacred threads in front of the mandapam and Murali (52) of Moorthy Street. Both were rushed to a private hospital.

Tension gripped the area as a group of people tried to block the road in protest. As the news spread, shops near the Ayodhya Mandapam downed shutters, but the presence of a large posse of policemen ensured order.

Joint Commissioner of Police (South) G.Dorairaj said that after a Periyar statue in Srirangam was partially damaged, police had stepped up security in sensitive places and deployed mobile patrol teams.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (T.Nagar) Baskaran said that eight teams had been formed to arrest the Ayodhya Mandapam culprits. "We have some clues about the auto rickshaw used by the miscreants," he said.

Police have registered a case of trespass, damage to property and attempt to murder.
