Held for forgery

Staff Reporter

Allegedly faked Minister Maken's signature

NEW DELHI: A 31-year-old man has been arrested by the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Crime Branch in connection with the forgery of signatures of Union Minister of State for Urban Development Ajay Maken. A hunt has been launched for the prime accused in the case.

The police received a complaint from Sreedharan T.V., personal secretary to Mr. Maken, alleging that the Union Minister's letterhead with his forged signatures had been used to seek a D-group job for one Mukesh Kumar in NDPL. The forgery came to light in October last year when NDPL officials approached Mr. Sreedharan for clarification on some of the contents of the letter.

Acting on the complaint, a case was registered at the Parliament Street police station and the EOW was directed to carry out the investigations.

A team under the supervision of Assistant Commissioner of Police Dheeraj Kumar tracked down Mukesh, who purportedly disclosed that one Loha Singh had approached him and offered a job in the NDPL against payment of Rs. 50,000. Further investigations revealed that Sujeet Kumar Jha, a resident of Muzzaffarpur in Bihar, had been operating under pseudonym Loha Singh.

At the instance of the police, Mukesh contacted Sujeet and asked him to meet near Udyog Bhavan on Tuesday. Subsequently, the police arrested him.

During interrogation, Sujeet purportedly disclosed that he had worked as office assistant with different MPs and politicians over the past decade. Deputy Commissioner of Police (EOW) Prabhakar said: "Sujeet claims that he had arranged the forged letter of Mr. Maken in connivance with one Ranjeet Kumar, for whom a hunt has been launched."
