RAICHUR: Members of the Raichur Zilla Prachina Kalakrutigala Samrakshana Sangha urged the district administration to take steps to provide security to historical monuments in the district and restore damaged structures, including a pair of stone elephants within a fortress in Malliabad village near here.

K.M. Purad, president and H. Pamapaiah Setty, former president of the Raichur District Kannada Sahitya Parsishat, Ayyappa Tukkai, and social activistsgathered at the Deputy Commissioner's office on Saturday. They demanded that the Government provide security to historical monuments and restore important monuments in Raichur and the Malliabad forts.

They even presented a damaged tusk of a stone elephant to the Deputy Commissioner Tushar Girinath and submitted a memorandum, appealing to the district administration to restore the damaged tusk .

They told the Deputy Commissioner that the beautifully carved pair of stone elephants once adorned the gateway of the historical fortress of Malliabad. But the monuments were crumbling owing to lack of maintenance.

Recently, some vandals had cut a portion of the ear of one of the elephants, while they removed a tusk of another.

Later speaking to presspersons, the Deputy Commissioner said that recently the Union Government had released Rs. 1 crore to the Archaeological Department here to take up renovation and restoration of historical forts and monuments in the district.
