Elephant donated

Tirumala: A native of Bellary, Anand Singh, on Saturday donated a three-year-old female elephant to the Tirumala temple. The temple priests named the jumbo as `Vaishnavi'. Singh, who fetched the animal from Assam forests, also donated Rs. 2 lakhs for meeting its feeding expenses. — Staff Reporter

Farmer ends life

KURNOOL: A farmer, Challaiah, 36, committed suicide by consuming poison at Sirivel in Kurnool district on Saturday. Financial troubles were said to be the reason for the suicide. — Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Ryotu Sangham has called for dharnas on December 11 before Collectorates across the State to press for several demands like sanction of loans on three per cent interest and waiver of interest to ryots holding below five acres. — Special Correspondent

Head constable killed in accident

KADAPA: A head constable of Proddatur Police Control Room Pushparaj (HC No. 995), who was on a morning walk, was run over by a bus at Kanumulopalle in Siddhavatam mandal on Saturday, according to the police. He had been working at the Technology and Training Development Centre on outskirts of Kadapa city. His body was shifted to Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences. — Staff Reporter

Sonia's birthday celebrated

KURNOOL: Congress leaders celebrated the birthday of AICC president Sonia Gandhi here on Saturday. Mayor S. Raghurami Reddy and other leaders took part in the celebration. KAKINADA: Polamati Subbarao, 55, a farm labourer, reportedly committed suicide at his house in Pathakolamuru village under Rajanagaram police station limits on Saturday. - Correspondent

26 huts destroyed

Vizianagaram: Twenty-six houses were destroyed in a fire accident at Gunkalam village, near here on Saturday. Three shops were gutted due to short-circuit at Kamma Veedhi, according to fire station sources here. Correspondent

Funds for fishermen rehabilitation

ELURU: The State government has released Rs. 15 crores for rehabilitation of fishermen displaced by Operation Kolleru in West Godavari and Krishna districts.

According to a press release, the West Godavari district will receive Rs. 10 crores while Krishna district will receive Rs. 5 crores under the livelihood enhancement action plan, involving stakeholders of Kolleru. The affected fishermen will be rehabilitated by provision of alternative livelihood resources under the programme. - Staff Reporter

Trader fined

GUNTUR: A trader of Tenali Poornachandra Rao who was allegedly getting some wooden items made out of `nalla maddi' wood illegally, was booked by Forest Department officials and imposed a penalty.

Tenali Range Officer A. Satyanarayana and section officer Md. Jani imposed a penalty of Rs. 20,000 and seized the unauthorised wooden logs. - Staff Reporter
