`Breakthrough' in explosives seizure case

Staff Reporter

Unearths network with links to explosives dealer at Calicut

RAMANATHAPURAM: A Tamil Nadu police team from Sivaganga, aided by the Kerala and Andhra Pradesh police, on Saturday claimed a "breakthrough" in the explosives seizure case at Manamadurai in Sivaganga district.

The team, which visited "suspected places" in Kerala based on inputs collected from Andhra Pradesh, unearthed a network with links to an explosives dealer at Calicut. With the help of the Calicut police, it identified the godown in Calicut from where the explosives were sent to "select persons" for nefarious activities.

A police officer told The Hindu that the team had established the connection of Ibrahim Kutty of Calicut with a gang that had international connections. Kutty had sent several consignments of explosives into Tamil Nadu through the gang, which, in turn, sent them to Sri Lanka through Rameswaram for the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Ealem.

The officer said Kutty had gone underground. The police team was hopeful of arresting him soon. Efforts were made to obtain a search warrant from a Calicut court to raid the godown and search Kutty's house. All the members of the gang and their connection with terrorist organisations would be unearthed once Kutty was arrested.

A special team led by Manamdurai DSP Nagajothi on Saturday raided the houses of Mydheen of Irumeni village and Vijayakumar of Ramanathapuram, who are among the accused in the case.

Another team raided the house of Vinodkumar in Surveyor Colony, Madurai.

The DSP said the police team had confiscated documents, a telephone diary and some Sri Lankan currency notes from the house. More documents were found at Vijayakumar's house.
