TIRUCHI: A bronze statue of Periyar E.V. Ramasamy, replacing the concrete one that was damaged on Thursday, was unveiled at Srirangam on Saturday. Though the concrete statue had been installed at the site, the Dravidar Kazhagam planned to replace it with a bronze statue subsequently. Following Thursday's incident, the bronze statue of Periyar in a sitting posture was brought in quickly and installed atop the 12-foot high pedestal. Though the unveiling ceremony was slated for December 16, the statue was thrown open for public viewing on Saturday itself. Dravidar Kazhagam leader K. Veeramani inspected the statue. When contacted, he said the statue was unveiled by "those who had installed it." However, the programme scheduled for December 16 would be held as scheduled. A conference on `eradication of superstition' would also be conducted.
