Correspondent

MAHABUBNAGAR: The police was forced to use lathi on Saturday when a section of the candidates who were attending the army recruitment rally here turned violent against the decision of the army officers with regard to the qualifying height. The rally, which started on Friday evening, would continue till December 12.

Some candidates were injured in the lathicharge. Several police personnel sustained injuries in stone pelting by the enraged candidates.

Over 6,000 candidates came from nine districts to participate in the verification of documents and physical test. As per the announcement by the recruiting authorities for the post of soldier (trademan and general duty), the required height was specified as 166 cm. But when the candidates attended the preliminary examination, the authorities rejected those below 172 cm.

The candidates entered into arguments with army officials .

To quell the candidates, the police resorted to lathicharge.
