ADILABAD: Cotton farmers staged dharna in front of the Zilla Parishad building on Saturday demanding that the Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) continue its minimum support price operations (MSP) at all purchase centres in the district.

The dharna was staged during the lunch hour of the general body meeting which was attended by Adilabad MP T. Madhusudan Reddy, MLAs C. Ramchander Reddy (Adilabad), A. Indrakaran Reddy (Nirmal) and Ajmera Govind Naik (Khanapur), Collector R. Subba Rao and chairman Rathod Ramesh.

Earlier, Telugu Desam Party ZPTC members led by floor leader Jogu Ramanna had demanded the same in the meeting.

They accused the CCI of colluding with private traders "to cheat farmers."

Concern voiced

The members voiced concern about decreasing cotton price because the CCI had stopped purchase in Adilabad on account of holidays.

Students' protest

Meanwhile, students of a local private school and farmers from Boath too staged separate dharnas.

The former was protesting against displacement of students from the school premises by the municipal authorities and the latter was demanding construction of canals on Boath irrigation project.

Mr. Madhusudan Reddy had initially moved a resolution for construction of a ZP guest house at Utnoor with an estimated cost of Rs. 25 lakhs. He announced an aid of Rs. 5 lakhs from his MPLADS funds for the purpose.
