Beedi workers to hold rally in Hyderabad tomorrow

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: A rally against printing the statutory health warning on beedi packets would be held here on Monday, the day on which the winter session of the Assembly begins.

Beedi workers from various districts would be mobilised for the demonstration under the aegis of Andhra Pradesh Beedi and Cigar Workers Union, affiliated to Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU).

Assembly session

CITU State vice-president S. Punyavathi and union co-convenor S. Rama told a news conference here on Saturday that the rally was being organised to coincide with the Assembly session as all parties had shifted blame on the others for the introduction of the mark in the recent Karimnagar Lok Sabha by-election.

The parties had promised to stand by the workers until the legislation that was supposed to come into effect from February 1 was withdrawn.

The rally would be held precisely to mount pressure on these parties to strive for a resolution demanding the Centre not to go ahead with the proposal, they added.
