Senior advocates felicitated

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: There is a crisis within the fraternity of advocates and the issue should be addressed soon, Advocate-General Uday Holla has said.

He was speaking at a function organised on the High Court premises by the Karnataka State Bar Council (KSBC) to felicitate designated senior advocates on Saturday.

The KSBC had organised the function on the Advocates Association premises at the High Court, to honour and felicitate 56 senior designated advocates in the State. The function was attended by about 40 senior advocates.

Former Advocates-General B.V. Acharya, R.N. Narasimha Murthy, A.N. Jayaram and B.T. Parthasarthy spoke.

Mr. Murthy termed as "unfortunate" the "fall in values" that the legal profession once stood for. He said though the KSBC existed for decades it was only during elections that it was remembered. He said though he was not for confrontation with the judiciary, it was only in recent times that the council had stood firm on certain issues concerning the advocates.

Mr. A.N. Jayaram felt that growing commercialisation and monetary benefits were eating away into the values of the profession.

Mr. Acharya said this was the first time in the country that a Bar Council was felicitating members of the profession.

KSBC chairman Y.R. Sadashiva Reddy said the Bar had a tradition of welcoming and felicitating advocates and presiding officers sworn in as judges but that this was the first time in decades that it is felicitating advocates. He hoped that this tradition would continue.

Some of the designated advocates felicitated were M.S. Gopal; B.T. Parthasarthy; A.N. Jayaram, R.N. Narasimha Murthy; B.V. Acharya; K.L. Lakshminarayana Rao; and Jayakumar S. Patil.
