Doha: Super heavyweight Johnson Varghese assured himself of a medal without entering the ring as he got a walkover from Ibraheem Hasan Al-Zaabi of the UAE in the quarterfinals at the Aspire Hall here on Saturday. Varghese is scheduled to face Mukhtarkhan Dildabekov of Kazakhstan in the semifinals on Monday. In archery, Reena Kumari (619), Dola Banerjee (615), Punya Prabha (591) and Chekrovolu Swuro (590) were placed 17th, 18th, 27th and 29th in the women's qualification FITA rounds over 70 and 60 metres. In the men's section, Tarundeep Rai (615), Mangal Singh (604), Jayanta Talukdar (601) and Vishwas (581) were placed 7th, 14th, 16th and 23rd respectively, at the half way stage. There will be two more rounds over 50 and 30 metres before the rankings for the knock-out is made. In golf, Gaganjeet Bhullar (140), Chiragh Kumar (142), Anirban Lahiri (142) and Joseph Chakola (143) were trying to catch up with the leaders in the men's event at the half way stage. Do Hoon Kim of Korea led comfortably as he shot a seven-under 65 following the two-under 69 overnight. In the women's event, Meghna Bal (141), Sharmila Nicollet (148) and Vaishnavi Sinha (150) were trying hard to secure at least the team bronze medal. In volleyball, India beat UAE 25-12, 25-14, 25-19 in its last qualifying league match in group `A'.
