Zhou Chunxiu wins marathon gold

Special Correspondent

DOHA: Undeterred by the harsh sun, Zhou Chunxiu of China raced to the women's marathon gold clocking 2:27:03 in the 15th Asian Games at the Corniche here on Saturday.

The 28-year-old Zhou, who placed fifth in the world championship last year in Finland, set a hot pace in the first half and distanced herself from the two Japanese who eventually took the other medals behind her.

Zhou, one of the few athletes in the world to have timed under 2:20:00, eased off in the second half, leaving the rest to fight it out for the other positions. She was not too pleased with her performance as she said she believed that she could do a lot better.

"I was in good shape today. I have been training for this and was confident that I could perform. The weather was not good and it was windy. My training (helped my conditioning)," said Zhou.

The results: 1. Zhou Chunxiu (Chn) 2:27:03; 2. Kiyoko Shimahara (Jpn) 2:30:34; 3. Kayoko Obata (Jpn) 2:30:38.
