NEW DELHI: Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party president Harsh Vardhan on Saturday demanded that the 68 acres that the MCD has got vacated of illegal occupation be used to rehabilitate the traders who have been affected by the sealing and demolition exercise in the Capital. Dr. Vardhan said that large tracts of MCD land worth several crores of rupees had been illegally occupied and civic body officials had connived to facilitate the illegal occupation. "If this (illegally occupied) land is vacated, then it can fulfil the needs of the traders," he added. "If the Government is ready to rehabilitate the poor people residing in slum clusters, there should be no difficulty in rehabilitating the traders. Lakhs of traders have been rendered unemployed due to the sealing drive. Their economic condition is not good enough to enable them to purchase shops for Rs. 40 to 50 lakhs in big malls If the land which has been vacated by the MCD is used for creating commercial facilities then the unemployed traders could be rehabilitated," said Dr. Vardhan.
