Israeli composer Gil Shohat to perform with Akram Khan

NEW DELHI: It will be a concert of a different kind at Kamani Auditorium here on December 17 to mark the 15th anniversary of the establishment of India-Israel diplomatic relations.

The much awaited fusion concert by Gil Shohat, Israeli composer, conductor and pianist, and Akram Khan on the tabla has been organised jointly by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations and the Embassy of Israel in New Delhi.

Born in Israel, Gil Shohat began his musical studies at the age of seven. By 12 he was composing and performing his own piano pieces. His first orchestral composition -- a cantata, "The Nightingale and The Rose" -- was commissioned by the Israel Chamber Orchestra when he was 18 years old.

Leading Israeli musician

Both at home and abroad, audiences as well as critics regard Gil Shohat as one of the leading Israeli musicians of his generation.

Five years ago he came into the limelight with his opera "Alpha and Omega", the "largest original opera production" ever staged in Israel.

In addition, Shohat has composed nine symphonies, eight concertos for various instruments, numerous choral and chamber works along with myriad compositions for the piano.

Prizes and accolades

For his outstanding music Gil Shohat has won many prizes and accolades including the Rubin Israel Music Academy Prize (1993), the Italian Government Grant for Advanced Studies (1995-1996), the British Council Award (1997), the Rich Foundation (2001) and the Tel Aviv Foundation for the Arts (2003).

Starting with the 2005-2006 season, Gil Shohat is the new musical director and chief conductor of the Israel Chamber Orchestra. Since 2003 he has been the music adviser and head of music of the world-renowned Israel Festival in Jerusalem.
