Hyderabad bowled out cheaply

TIMBER! A.T. Rayudu's spectacular dismissal by Amit Singh seemed to take the fight out of Hyderabad.

HYDERABAD: The picture of a beaming Anshuman Gaekwad — the Gujarat coach — applauding a thoroughly professional display from his boys, summed up the dismal outing for Hyderabad, which was bundled out for 205 on the first day of the Ranji Trophy Super League Group `B' match at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium here on Saturday.

It was a performance which knocked the living daylights out of a confident host. On a pitch which required technical competence and careful stroke selection, Gujarat captain Parthiv Patel was the unobtrusive hero. With a packed off-side field, he ensured that the Hyderabad top-order did not get off to a flier as opener D.B. Ravi Teja nicked one to the slip cordon. And then, between lunch and tea, Hyderabad slumped from 79 for one to 150 for seven, thanks to some listless batting.

Opener Tirumalasetty Suman's scored a flamboyant 55 (118 balls, 8x4). But he paid the penalty for playing an unwarranted inside-out lofted stroke towards deep cover off Timil Patel. The leg-spinner was the surprise packet for Gujarat along with Singh.

The saving grace for the host was D. Vinay Kumar's (54 not out, 5x4, 1x6) return to form. The scores:
