JAIPUR: The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) and Micronutrient Initiative (MI) have launched a pilot project for promotion of salt iodisation among small and medium salt producers in Rajasthan. The project, which is the first of its kind in the desert State, will be undertaken at Nawa in Nagaur district -- the oldest and most important centre of salt iodisation in Rajasthan producing 1-million metric tonnes of salt annually. The initiative, introduced with the support of the Centre for Community Economics and Development Consultants' Society (CECOEDECON), is aimed at improving the availability and accessibility of quality iodised salt to vulnerable sections of society and eliminate iodine deficiency disorders (IDD). State Minister for Food and Civil Supplies Kirorilal Meena, inaugurating the project here earlier this week, said the State Government would energise the public distribution system to enhance the access of iodised salt to the poor sections in order to contain the scourge of IDD. CECOEDECON's Project Coordinator Prakash Chhangani said the NGO would appoint self-help groups for successful implementation of the project through capacity building, developing a robust infrastructure and establishing cooperative societies.
