COIMBATORE: The police have provided security for temples and statues of leaders in the city, following the desecration of the Periyar statue at Srirangam in Tiruchi and the assault on temples and mutts at many places in the State. Armed police personnel have been posted at the temples and statues on a 24-hour vigil. Provisions of the National Security Act would be invoked against persons who desecrated the places of worship or the statues to create strife between communities, the police said on Saturday.
Activists removed
The police removed about 40 activists of various Hindu organisations when they attempted to stage a demonstration at Kavundampalayam near here to protest against the assault on temples and mutts. The protest was led by the Bharatiya Janata Party's National Council member, S.R. Seghar.
