Yaseen Quraishi
HYDERABAD : He was neither formally educated, nor trained in fashion technology. Yet when Yaseen Quraishi designed and printed the image of Jesus Christ being crucified on a T-shirt, it was certainly a head-turner. It was not only the colour separation and printing of exacting standards, but the transfer of the image with all `its agony and deep emotion', that won Quraishi the National Screen Printing Award- 2006. The award is instituted by the Screen Printing and Graphics Association of India in textile printing category. This is the second time that he won the award. For this soft-spoken Hyderabadi, who handles major corporate clients designing and printing the T-shirts and sportswear, work is nothing but trying to better the excellence with each coming day.
Humble beginning
Working from a small unit in Red Hills, Quraishi feels proud that he got the award despite stiff competition from Mumbai and Delhi. The money that came along with the award is little. "But the satisfaction is immeasurable when I recall the humble beginning I made," he says beaming. Driven by pecuniary problems, Quraishi joined his elder brother Abdul Kareem's small-time screen printing shop as assistant at the age of 13 years dropping out of school. They used to print images on bicycle seat covers then. Gradually, they moved on to printing wedding cards. Just when they were settling down, Kareem passed away and Quraishi had to keep the pot boiling. All that he had was a book on screen printing which his brother got from Zurich. Learning the nuances of printing step by step, he mastered the techniques and is now the most sought after technician in twin cities. Then he began focussing on screen printing images on T-shirts. Winning work contracts and awards have become a way of life now. From reputed IT companies to leading sports shops to top garment manufacturers, everyone knocks at his doors across the State-all for printing images on T-shirts.
