HYDERABAD: The city will be filled with the fragrance of roses for two days. The Annual 30th Rose Show that started on Saturday is hosting more than 500 varieties of the flower. Other attractions of the show include sale of rose plants and display of Ikebana arrangements. Inaugurating the show, Information Minister Mohd. Ali Shabbir said, "Horticulture will see a greater expanse once the international airport comes up. There will also be a lot of demand for cut roses and hence, greater emphasis has to be given to rose cultivation in the State. As part of the process, the Department of Horticulture is already providing subsidies to rose farmers."
21 trophies
During the show, 21 trophies have been given to those participating in competitions held under nine sections. Indira Park won the competition under institutions, parks and nurseries category. G. Vasantha won trophy under individual category. `King of the show' trophy went to a flower called `Brandy' displayed by Directorate of Oilseeds Research. Mariacallas displayed by Ms. Vasantha won `Queen of the show'.
`Rosarian of the Year'
Ms. Vasantha also won Hyderabad Rose Society Challenge Trophy for sections I to VII along with `Rosarian of the Year' and best display of yellow roses. `Prince of the show' went to Rakthima displayed by ANGR Agriculture University. The agriculture university itself won the award for `Rosarian Institution of the Year', most fragrant rose called Oklahoma and for the best public institutional garden too. The show will be open for public viewing from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday.
