Thyaga Brahma Gana Sabha honours artists

27th `Isai, Iyal Nataka vizha' inaugurated; `Vani Kala Sudhakara' title conferred

CHENNAI: Sri Thyaga Brahma Gana Sabha's 27th `Isai, Iyal Nataka vizha' was inaugurated here on Saturday.

Five veteran artists — vocalist K.J. Yesudas, violinist M. Chandrasekaran, mridangam vidhwan Guruvayur Durai, dancer Shylaja Ramji and dramatist K.S. Nagarajan were conferred the title of `Vani Kala Sudhakara' on the occasion by the Sabha.

Industrialist Nalli Kuppuswamy Chetti honoured the artists with shawl and silver salver. A. Natarajan, former director of Doordarshan Kendra, Chennai, dramatist and MLA, S. Ve. Shekher, and veteran artist P.S. Narayanaswamy felicitated them.

Mr. Narayanaswamy recalled his long association with the artists. He said Mr. Chandrasekaran had 60 disciples many of them performing artists.

Mr.Nagarajan had brought dignity to the profession of drama. The dramatist ensured that entire family came to watch plays, he said.

Mr. Shekher said only four sabhas in the city gave slots for drama during the December music festival, though thousands of music concerts are being held in various sabhas during the season. He said Mr. Nagarajan had brought him to the stage and called for inculcating discipline that would ensure success in life. He thanked the Sabha for including drama in its festival.

Mr. Yesudas said his father was instrumental in his becoming a carnatic musician. ``It was with his blessings that I learnt carnatic music. I have a lot of gurus in my life. It was their blessings that elevated me to this level."

M. Murali of Sri Krishna Sweets, N. Krishna Moorthy, president and J. Krishnamachary, secretary of the Sabha, spoke.
