THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Government has drawn up a detailed plan to intensify the sale of the State Sports Super Bumper Lottery, which was launched last month with the aim of raising a minimum corpus of Rs. 100 crores for the development of sports and games in Kerala.

Addressing a press conference here on Sunday, the Sports Minister, M. Vijayakumar, said as part the first phase of the plan now conceived, a special campaign would be launched in all the educational institutions across the State. The State-wide programme would be inaugurated by the Education Minister, M.A. Baby, at a function to be held at the St. Joseph's Higher Secondary School here on December 13.

According to the plan, a sale of Rs. 60 crores was expected to be realised, as students in the lower primary school was expected to purchase five tickets per class, seven at the upper primary level and 15 at the high school level. The Minister said the programme would cover 50 lakh school students in the State besides 3.5 lakh at the vocational higher secondary level, 1.82 lakh in the colleges, 1.50 lakh professional college students and 2.50 lakh teachers and non-teaching staff employed in these institutions.

However, no target has been set for any institution. "The projected sum in based entirely on the belief that the student and teaching community would forward to support this great social cause. There would no compulsion on anybody to purchase the tickets," Mr. Vijayakumar said.

The Minister said prominent sportspersons who had served the cause of Kerala sport would be honoured at the concluding function of the Kerala Piravi celebrations in Thrissur on December 20. The medal-winners from Kerala at the ongoing Asian Games in Doha would be also accorded a reception at the same function.
