Jaipur: Several human rights groups on Sunday demanded scrapping of the Rajasthan Prevention of Anti-social Activity Bill, 2006 (organised crime) calling it unconstitutional and against human rights.
Daylong seminar held
At a daylong seminar here, the activists said they would approach Governor Pratibha Patil and request her not to clear the bill that was passed in the State assembly in October. The legislation could be used as a tool to check protests, sit-in demonstrations and other rallies and would be used against all those who are drawing attention towards various issues, the delegates at the seminar said.
Policeman's statement sufficient in the bill
Premkishan Sharma, senior lawyer of Rajasthan High Court said the worst feature of the act was that the crime of an accused would not be proved in the court, as even the statement by a policeman would be sufficient to convict him. Kavita Srivastav, a social activist of People's Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) alleged that the law would be used by the State Government to stop agitations, protests and rallies. - PTI.
