Reporter's Diary

Lame excuse is quite a natural expression for a person if he or she fails in an endeavour.

For the physically challenged J. Ranjith Kumar, his performance at the XI Fespic Athletic Championships for the disabled at Malaysia was not up to his expectation. It was no mean achievement either. He finished third at the shotput event. He did not complain of poor practice equipment or lack of international exposure for not winning the gold medal but blames himself for the debacle.

No body knew that he was running a high temperature under the influence of a viral fever. His urge to succeed had shut his mouth. His friends noticed it during practice sessions and advised him to take rest. Instead, he went for medical attention and asked the doctors to make him fit for the championship, which was not possible.

It did not deter his determination and he participated in the event and went on to win the bronze medal.

He says that he had learnt his lessons well and it had strengthened his conviction to finish at the top in the next international championship.

The authorities of Madurai Kamaraj University often meet peculiar situations involving their own staff.

One such incident that happened recently was when a faculty member who retired had locked his department room and took the key home. Other staff, who had to take their books from that room, made frantic efforts to get the key and informed the Vice-Chancellor when they could not succeed. Now, it was the VC's turn to get the room opened and he too had to make some serious efforts to make the professor bring the key.

Finally the man was traced and a special messenger was sent to his house to collect the room key. That was how the department room at the EMRC was opened.

"This is how some staff members have been working. It is taking lot of effort to get even the normal routine works done," quipped the Vice-Chancellor at a press meet held last week.
