Muslim bodies float front

Special Correspondent

Being projected as a movement aimed at achieving socio-economic and cultural empowerment

KOZHIKODE: A group of Muslim organisations, in a bid to consolidate their activities in the southern States, have formed an organisation by name Popular Front of India (PFI).

The Karnataka-based Karnataka Forum for Dignity (KFD), National Development Front (NDF), and Manitha Neethi Pasarai (MNP) of Tamil Nadu are the constituents of the Front.

These organisations would continue to work as independent organisations in their respective States. The decision to float the Front was taken at a meeting held in Kozhikode on November 22. The Front is being projected as a movement aimed at achieving socio-economic and cultural empowerment of the deprived and the oppressed.

Its activities would be confined to the states of south India, the Front's general secretary, E.M. Abdurahman, said.

KFD shot into prominence organising a State secretariat march and an anti-dowry campaign. MNP has been engaged in human rights protection campaign in Tamil Nadu and publishes a monthly magazine Vidiyal Velli. NDF, active in Kerala since 1993, has branches in all the 14 districts.

The PFI evolved at the `South India Council' that was formed at a regional-level meeting in Bangalore attended by Muslim activists from all South Indian States in January 2004. An ad hoc committee, with E. Abubacker of Kozhikode as chairman, was formed at the meeting to steer the activities of the PFI till the election of a full-fledged executive committee.
