MYSORE: The Centre for Information Science and Technology of University of Mysore will start admissions for Diploma in software development, bioinformatics, geographic information system and multimedia technology from December 15, according to a release from the centre's director. The applications should be submitted on or before January 4, 2007. In case of the number of applicants exceeding the maximum limit, an entrance examination would be conducted, the release said. — Staff Correspondent

Appeal

MYSORE: The United Trade Union Centre— Lenin Sarani (UTUC-LS) has appealed to the working classes to participate in the nationwide strike called by the Confederation of Trade Unions on December 14. In a release, UTUC-LS leader Vasantha said here on Monday that the condition of the working classes was worsening owing to liberalisation, globalisation and privatisation.

The Government was not making any effort in addressing the problems faced by the working class. — Staff Correspondent

Zoo programme

MYSORE: Mysore Zoo is organising a special programme for the physically challenged and groups of children on Tuesdays, when the zoo will be closed for visitors, according to a release from its executive director. Human resource development summit

BANGALORE: The Institute of HRD (Human Resource Development) has organised a two-day summit from December 15 here. Aaron Watson, spokesman of the institute, told presspersons here on Monday that 250 HR professionals from India, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Mauritius and West Asia representing public sector, information technology, BPO (business process outsourcing), manufacturing and services would participate. Mr. Watson said private companies, particularly those in India, needed to focus on performance management to achieve global levels of excellence. This could happen only when human capital was fully harnessed. The summit would help the companies understand this key issue. A book on performance management, edited by Siraj and S.K. Prasad, would be released by the chief guest, Mona Donahoe, centre head, HSBC, at the inaugural session, he said. — Staff Reporter

`Set up human rights commission'

TUMKUR: Human rights activist L.R. Narayanachar has urged the Government to constitute a human rights commission at the State-level. Speaking at the World Human Rights Day function here on Sunday, Mr. Narayanachar said Karnataka was inordinately delaying the formation of the State Human Rights Commission. "Karnataka is among the three States due to constitute the commission," he added. Recalling that the Government had, 10 months ago, announced that the formation of the human rights commission was in process, he said work had not been completed yet. Mr. Narayanachar welcomed the Karnataka High Court's directive to the Government last week in this connection. — Staff Correspondent

30 children taken ill after meals

DAVANGERE: Over 30 children who fell ill after consuming mid-day meal on Sunday at the government higher primary school at Azad Nagar have been admitted to the general hospital. Children complained of stomachache and nausea soon after having meals. Parents complained that the use of inferior quality foodgrains was the cause for this. The Education Department denied the allegation and said that food was not properly prepared and rice was half-cooked. Over 20 children were discharged from the hospital on Monday. — Staff Correspondent

Seminar on learning of English

HASSAN: The Ambedkar Study and Training Institute Foundation along with the Corporation Bank N.R. Circle branch conducted a seminar titled, "Knowledge of English is a necessity" at the Shatamanotsava Building in the Government PU College for Boys on Sunday.

Inaugurating the seminar, Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer F.R. Jamaadar said at a time when so many changes were taking place at a global level, English had become a necessity. He also inaugurated free spoken English workshop. — Staff Correspondent

Need for value education stressed

HAVERI: A 10-day NSS special camp organised by the KLE Society's Gudleppa Hallikeri College in Kulenur village in Haveri taluk concluded on Sunday. Speaking at the valedictory function, retired teacher Channabasappa Shigihalli said selfishness, clashes and destructive forces was clear indication of the degeneration of human society. There was an urgent need to put in concerted efforts to revive good values. He stressed the importance of moral education in the education system. The NSS programme coordinator M.S. ATM facility opened

HASSAN: Chairman of Karnataka Bank Ltd. Ananthakrishna inaugurated the Money Plant International Visa Debit Card and ATM facility in Hassan on Saturday while Malnad Education Society secretary D.A. Chandre Gowda switched on the facility.

Mr. Ananthakrishna said Karnataka Bank had adopted Gandhian thoughts and the teachings of M. Visvesvaraya. Mahatma Gandhi felt that development was possible only through promoting agriculture while Visvesvaraya stressed agriculture and industrial growth for development of the country. — Staff Correspondent

KRC stages a dharna

DAVANGERE: Activists of Karnataka Rakashana Vedike staged a dharna in front of the railway station protesting against the action of the Railways Department to take out Kannada boards in railway stations. They later stopped a train bound for Bangalore for some time.

The activists led by Rame Gowda said that it was wrong on part of the Railway Board to take a decision to put only boards in three languages Hindi, English and Tamil and remove boards that are in other languages. The activists said the protest would be a prelude to a major agitation if the board failed to withdraw its step and give prominence to local languages. — Staff Correspondent

Vanila beans purchase postponed

SIRSI: Companies and agencies purchasing vanilla beans stopped their purchase for an indefinite period from Monday in Sirsi, Siddapur and Yellapur taluks. It is said growers harvested tender vanilla and brought the ungraded variety in a hurry to sell it at the current price even though it was low. The companies appealed to growers to stop premature harvesting and postponed purchases to allow the beans to ripen, according to sources.

Power shutdown

HUBLI: Owing to work on charging underground power cable network the following areas in Hubli will have no power supply on Tuesday between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m., Hubli Electricity Supply Company has said in a release.

The areas affected are Saligram Complex, Jayanagar, Raiji Hospital, Vikasnagar, KSRTC Divisional Office, M.M. Joshi Eye Institute, Manipal Apartment, R.B. Patil Nursing Home, Canara Hotel, Hosur, Mahila Vidyapeeth, Cotton Market and surrounding areas. — Staff Correspondent

Timber recovered

SIRSI: Acting on a tip-off, Forest Department officials recovered logs, including teakwood, worth Rs. 50,000 at Mulemane Cross here on Sunday.

The officials chased a jeep , which was carrying the logs, from Manchikere near here. The driver unloaded the logs on the roadside and disappeared with the vehicle. A case has been registered.

Petition filed

PANAJI: Bombay High Court in Goa on Monday admitted a petition filed by teaching staff of Goa University, which said that the State Government should be restrained from taking over 50 acres of land from the possession of Goa University.

The Government has plans to set up a convention centre on 25 acres of land and has decided to give another 25 acres to Wipro for an IT research centre.

The Court, while fixing the next hearing after six weeks, asked the Government not to interfere with the land in question till the court case was disposed off. — Special Correspondent

Arrested

HUBLI: The Hubli Police have seized eight auto rickshaws that were sold in Hubli on fake documents and arrested two persons in this connection. They gave the names of the arrested as Aftab Ahmed Sheikh and Farhan Ahmed Sheikh. The police said the accused purchased the auto rickshaws in Mumbai at lesser price and sold the same for a higher price after fabricating documents. A case has been registered at Gokul Road Police Station. — Staff Correspondent

UGC test for fellowship

BANGALORE: The University Grants Commission (UGC) National Educational Test (NET) for Junior Research Fellowship and Eligibility for Lecturership under the faculties of Humanities, Social Sciences, Languages, Electronics Science, Environmental Science and Computer Application Science, will be conducted on December 17. The test centre will be Government Arts College, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Veedhi, for Economics, Kannada, English and Library Information Science. For all the other subjects, the test will be held at the University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering (UVCE), K.R. Circle. Admission tickets and other test materials have already been despatched to the candidates. Applications invited

Bangalore: Applications have been invited from eligible candidates belonging to Backward Classes and Minorities for financial assistance to pursue higher education in foreign countries. According to a release by the Backward Classes Department, the candidates should have got more than 60 per cent marks in degree or post graduation, be aged below 35 and have a family income of less than Rs. 12,000 a year. `EC was biased'

BANGALORE: Minister for Energy and Public Works H.D. Revanna on Monday accused the Election Commission of not taking into cognisance the violation of rules and poll code by the four Union Ministers, who toured the Chamundeswari Assembly Constituency in their official cars along with their staff, but chose to issue two notices to Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy. In his press conference, Mr. Revanna took objection to imposing Section 144 in the constituency on the day of polling intimidating the voters. Many voters did not even come out of their houses. — Staff Reporter

`Do or die' stir

BANGALORE: Daily wage employees throughout the State will go on an indefinite "do or die" struggle from Tuesday pressing for the regularisation of the services of 17,000 employees appointed after July 1984. The struggle will be conducted by Karnataka Daily Wage Employees Federation and Karnataka State Scheduled Castes/ Scheduled Tribe Government Daily Wage Employees Union at Jakkarayanakere here. According to a press release, federation president K.S. Sharma said that 17,000 employees were working in various government departments and zilla panchayats for 10 to 20 years. — Staff Reporter

Congress men held

BIDAR: Nearly 80 Congress workers were arrested in Bhalki on Monday when they tried to stop the inauguration of a mini water supply scheme by MLA Prakash Khandre. They were later released. The party workers said the bore well was dug using money collected from the people of the area and was inaugurated by Bidar MP Narsingrao Suryavanshi. Followers of the BJP MLA said it was dug under the scarcity relief schemes of the Government and opposing its inauguration by the MLA amounted to protocol violation. The Congress workers, led by Sushil Kumar Swamy Kailashanath Meenkera, and Town Municipal council members
