Tirunelveli
Staff Reporter
TIRUNELVELI : The newly elected council of the Tirunelveli Corporation commenced here on Monday with the chairman of the Thatchanallur zone making a startling statement that there was a threat from a senior DMK office-bearer to the life of the Mayor, A.L. Subramanian. "Since the life of the Mayor is under threat from V. Karuppasamy Pandian, the Tenkasi MLA and district in-charge of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, I have decided to forward petitions to the Chief Minister, M. Karunanidhi, and the Local Administration Minister, M.K. Stalin, seeking police protection to Mr. Subramanian, the senior most politician of the district," P. Subramanian, after staging a walkout from the council meeting, told reporters. Without denying or going into the veracity of the statement made by the Thatchanallur zone chairman, the Mayor, who presided over the meeting, sought to mellow down the situation, saying, "There is no need to attach much importance to this issue". Mr. Subramanian, who was elected unopposed from ward 7 on DMK ticket and subsequently expelled from the party for taking on K. Muthuramalingam, the official candidate for the Deputy Mayor election, said that the DMK in the district was a "divided house" with the factions being led by the Tirunelveli MLA, N. Maalairaja, and Mr. Karuppasamy Pandian. When reporters met the Mayor at his chamber after the council meeting, he said that he did not want to blow this episode out of proportions. "I don't give much importance to this issue and I won't discuss this problem with the party high command," he said. Refuting the allegations, Mr. Karuppasamy Pandian said that Mr. Subramanian, who was shunted out of the party for taking on the official candidate in the Deputy Mayor election, had been spreading rumours against him for the past two and a half months. "It's nothing but mud slinging," Mr. Karuppasamy Pandian said.
