Uttar Pradesh
Lucknow: Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav on Monday launched a veiled attack on Governor T V Rajeshwar on the issue of indefinite closure of Lucknow University even as Uttar Pradesh Assembly unanimously adopted a resolution authorising Mr. Yadav to take necessary steps to restore academic activities on the campus. Cutting across party lines, the members slammed Lucknow University Vice-Chancellor R P Singh's move to close the varsity sine die. Mr. Yadav, who described Vice Chancellor R P Singh as a ``dictator'', alleged that there was a conspiracy behind the closure of the varsity to defame his government and spread the ``canard'' that the law and order situation was worse. ``What is wrong with the law and order situation in Lucknow?'' he asked in the Assembly during Zero Hour. A visibly agitated Chief Minister said: ``This V-C is a dictator... he is abusing everyone... he is killing democracy.'' The Vice-Chancellor had met the Governor, who is also the University Chancellor, on December 8 and immediately after that announced the indefinite closure of the varsity and directed the students to vacate the hostels citing his inability to control the ``lawlessness on the campus''. Mr. Yadav claimed that Mr. Singh never furnished any list of students with criminal backgrounds in the varsity nor did he apprise the administration of the situation on the campus.
