Floods caused by Gundlavagu project in Warangal district

HYDERABAD:
Forest Minister S. Vijayarama Raju has said compensation will be paid to farmers against the loss of agriculture pumpsets and PVC pipes during the floods caused by the Gundlavagu project in Warangal district.
Responding to a question by V. Narender Reddy (Telugu Desam) in the Assembly on Monday, the Minister said an engineers' committee, which went into this issue was expected to submit its report shortly. He said a part of the project was washed away following a breach during the floods and attributed the `calamity' to 272.60 mm of rainfall received in the area on August 5.
The Minister denied the charge levelled by Mr. Reddy that the project got washed away because of substandard work done by the contractor. He said 850 acres of cropped areas suffered erosion/sand-casting, while 299 motors sets and 5,970 PVC pipes were washed way.
He said Rs 21.87 lakhs was paid as compensation to farmers who had lost crops and Rs 4.89 lakhs for loss of cattle.
