State urged to invoke Land Reforms Act
Special Correspondent
HYDERABAD:
Several Congress MLAs have urged the Government to invoke provisions of Andhra Pradesh Land Reforms (Ceiling on Agricultural Holdings) Act and reclaim land from individuals who possess land in excess of the ceiling. Addressing a press conference on Monday, V. Vasant Kumar and N. Manohar said though the Act specified that individuals could hold up to 54 acres of land, some were in possession of thousands of acres in and around twin cities.
Under the Act, it was mandatory for the individuals to declare their holdings and apply for change in land use, if any.
However, it was not being followed, Mr. Vasant Kumar said. He alleged that Margadarsi Financiers along with associate companies was holding land far in excess of the ceiling though, as an entity, it was a Hindu Undivided Family. The land in some cases was being converted into real estate ventures resulting in a boom in prices and denying the common man an opportunity to purchase land.
In view of this, the Government should reclaim the excess land through the land reform tribunals and distribute it among the poor, he added.
