National Book Fair begins

Thiruvananthapuram: The Hindu opened its stall at the National Book Fair at University Stadium here on Tuesday. Vice-Chairman of the State Planning Board Prabath Patnaik inaugurated the fair.

He said illiteracy was rampant in the country. He said literacy had contributed much to the growth of States such as Kerala and West Bengal. The National Book Fair is being organised as part of the Suvarna Keralam" programme of Kerala University.

Kerala University Vice-Chancellor M. K. Ramachandran Nair, Pro Vice-Chancellor V. Jayaprakash, veteran Communist leader P. Govinda Pillai and Member of the Kerala University Syndicate C. Bhaskaran were present.

The Cambridge University Press, Oxford University Press, Macmillan, Orient Longman, Krishnamurthy Foundation, Malayala Manorama publications, Mathurbhumi and Indian Express are among the major houses participating in the book fair.
