Last Sunday the audience at the Town Hall in Kozhikode got the opportunity to savour some evergreen melodies from Hindi cinema. The occasion was a musical tribute to Naushad, who died last May, organised by the Calicut Music Club.

In 1960, K. Asif created a masterpiece on celluloid called `Mughal-e-Azam.' The music, composed by Naushad Ali, played a significant role in making the film immortal.

Lata Mangeshakar's rendition of Pyar kiya to darna kya... is the best-known song from the film. But there is another Lata number which is by far the finest songs of Hindi cinema — Mohe panghat pe nand lal chhed gayo re... The song was rendered at the musical nite by P.I. Meera. Her rendition of Mohe bhool gaye sawariya... (`Baiju Bawara') was better.

Among the impressive songs were the duets Awaaz de kahan hai... (`Anmol Ghadi') by K. Venugopal and Swati and Tere husn ki kya tarif karoon... (`Leader') by A. Karvarnan and V.S. Remya. The other singers of the evening were T. Rajindranath, Harish Kumar, M.K. Kripal, P. Shanawaz, Manish Kumar, K.V. Rajendran, Sreedevi, Megha Dinesh, Swaroopa Prabhakar, Veena Saboo, Devaki Devi and Rasita.
