BANGALORE: Employers in the south are more optimistic about new jobs being created in the first quarter of 2007, according to the Manpower Employment Outlook Survey. The survey done by Manpower Inc. and its Indian arm indicates that the job market in this country will remain quite vibrant. Out of the 27 countries and regions surveyed, hiring intentions continue to be strong in India with an overall Net Employment Outlook of plus 39 per cent. It is a considerable year-over-year increase of 12 percentage points. Within India, employers in the south report positive hiring intentions with plus 42 per cent and those in the western region tops it with plus 43 per cent. Employers in the north are less optimistic at plus 40 per cent and the eastern region trails with a plus 28 per cent.
Hiring new hands
Of the 1,519 employers surveyed in the south, 43 per cent felt there would be an increase in hiring new hands and one per cent felt there could be a decrease. Forty six per cent of them felt that there might be no change in hiring while 10 per cent were unsure. In the mining and construction sectors (plus 44 per cent), the outlook has increased to 5 percentage points. The services sector employers also report a bullish Net Employment Outlook at plus 43 per cent, but there is a decrease of two percentage points. The finance, insurance and real estate sectors have shown a fall in employer hiring intentions by 11 percentage points, reporting a Net Employment Outlook of plus 39 per cent. Employers in the manufacturing sector forecast a slight dip of 3 percentage points and those in the wholesale and retail trade expect a moderately lower hiring pace with a decline of 8 percentage points. The Manpower Employment Outlook Survey in India covered employers in sectors of finance; insurance; real estate; manufacture; transportation and utilities, wholesale and retail trade.
