NEW DELHI: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sent notices to the Kerala Government, following a news report that five HIV-positive children were thrown out of school in Kottayam. The news item said theaction against the children, in the age group 4-10, was taken after parents of other pupils threatened to pull out their wards because of the stigma attached to HIV. The Commission asked the Secretaries of Health and General Education to look into the matter and send a factual report in two weeks.
Report sought from Madhya Pradesh DGP
The NHRC has also issued notice to the Madhya Pradesh Director General of Police following a newspaper report that a Dalit girl was burnt alive by her alleged rapist as she refused to drop the charge against him. Taking suo motu cognisance of the report, the Commission said this was a serious violation of human rights of the girl. She had allegedly been raped in July. The case is pending in a Hoshangabad court. The victim told the police before she died of her burns in a hospital in Pipariya that the accused Chhote Singh Rajput had threatened to kill her if she did not change her statement in court. The NHRC has asked the DGP to furnish a report within four weeks and find out whether any compensation was paid to the victim when she was alive.
