BANGALORE: Speakers at a seminar on religion and politics organised here by the Manava Dharma Antarashtreeya Pratishthana Kendra on the occasion of the seventh death anniversary of the Chief Minister late J.H. Patel hailed him as a practitioner of secular values. Inaugurating the seminar, Janata Dal (United) State president B. Somasekhar said caste politics in the country had relegated religion to the background, and added that secularism was being used as a cover to achieve partisan and selfish political interests. In the Chamundeswari bypoll, the caste factor played a major role. The other two evils that were plaguing politics was money and power, he added. Mr. Somasekhar said of late, dealers had become leaders and vice-versa and this trend was eating into the principles of democracy. It was time for an objective evaluation of the leaders performance. Former Minister and MLA P.G.R. Sindhia presided over the function. Patel's son Trishulpani Patel, former chairman of the Karnataka State Backward Classes Commission Ravivarma Kumar and former Chief Secretary B.S. Patil spoke.
