LONG WAIT: Passengers wait to book their tickets at the reservation office at Thrissur railway station.
THRISSUR: Lack of facilities in the reservation office of the Thrissur railway station is reportedly causing inconvenience to passengers. According to the Thrissur Railway Passengers' Association (TRPA), passengers have to wait in queues for more than two or three hours to purchase tickets. The token vending machine in the reservation office is out of order. "The machine was removed last week and has not been replaced. It costs about Rs.13,500. Railway authorities have now got numbers written on chairs in the reservation office for customers. The public have not responded well to this new system. Only three counters function in the reservation office and this adds to the woes of passengers. Four or five counters need to be opened to ease the rush,'' says Herbert Antony, secretary of TRPA. Railway officials say that there is an increase in the number of passengers from the Thrissur station. The number of reservation application forms being processed every day at the counters has increased from 600 to 800 in less than a year. About 1,500 passengers reserve their tickets at the office every day. The monthly earnings of the reservation office are about Rs.1 crore. The total monthly earnings of the station, including the revenue from the current ticket counters, is Rs.4.5 crore. During the Sabarimala season, there has been a 20 per cent increase in the number of passengers from this station. About 55 pairs of trains, including weekly services, pass through the Thrissur station every day.
