JPC on office of profit gets extension
Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI:
The Lok Sabha on Tuesday extended by six months the term of the Joint Parliamentary Committee going into the issue of office of profit.
The committee, headed by Congress MP Iqbal Ahmed Sardagi, which was to submit its report by the end of the current session, would now do so ``on the first day of the last week'' of the Budget session.
The committee was to provide generic and comprehensive definition of what entails `office of profit' that can be acceptable and implementable across the country in all the State legislatures. It was also to look into the Constitutional and legal position relating to office of profit and suggest in- depth definition of the issue.
It was set up earlier this year after the disqualification of Samajwadi Party member Jaya Bachchan from the Rajya Sabha for holding an office of profit. She was subsequently re-elected.
Congress president Sonia Gandhi also had to resign from her Rae Bareli Lok Sabha seat following the controversy, but was also re-elected.
