Sushanta Talukdar

GUWAHATI: The Assam Government has spent Rs.404 crore for detection and deportation of foreigners since the signing of the Assam Accord in 1985, Minister Bhuidhar Barman told the Assembly on Tuesday.

A total of 2,221 illegal Bangladeshi migrants were expelled.

Of the Rs.404 crore a sum of Rs.170 crore was spent from January 1, 2001 to November 30, 2006 for identifying 9,149 foreigners and expelling 1,864 of them, Dr. Barman, in charge of Assam Accord implementation, said. He was responding to queries from Badarud din Ajmal (Assam United Democratic Front), Hiren Kumar Das (Asom Gana Parishad) and Abhijit Hazarika (BJP).

The influx of foreigners into Assam was a continuous process. The Government had no information on the exact number of illegal migrants, Dr. Barman told Mr. Hazarika.

To a question by AGP member Alaka Sarma, he said 17.8 per cent of the Assam-Bangladesh border was yet to covered by barbed wire fencing.
