Dalits offer prayer at the Chawanda temple
Sulia (Rajasthan):
Hundreds of Dalits on Tuesday offered prayers amid tight security in an ancient temple here, nearly two-and-a-half months after a member of their community was stopped from entering the shrine that sparked protests against the district administration.
Since early morning people thronged the Chawanda temple and offered prayer, Superintendent of Police Govind Gupta said. Over 1,000 Dalits had queued up to enter the temple and there was no disturbance in the area. Around 200 personnel of the Rajasthan Armed Constabulary and other policemen were deputed to oversee law and order. Aruna Roy, Magsaysay awardee, led the devotees affiliated to the Dalit Adivasi Adhikar Abhiyan and Mazdoor Kisan Shakti Sangathan. PTI
