GULBARGA: The Federation of University and College Teachers Association in Karnataka and the Gulbarga University Private College Teachers' Association on Tuesday extended its support to the all-India general strike called by the trade unions on Thursday. In a statement issued here, federation president A.M. Narahari, its general secretary B.S. Makal and association general secretary S.L. Patil endorsed the support extended by the All India Federation of University and College Teachers Organisation (AIFUCTO). They said the college teachers would participate in the strike. The demands of the teachers included making the education a fundamental right, allocating a minimum of 6 per cent of the GDP to education, excluding higher education from the GATS, ban on direct entry of foreign universities, constituting a UGC pay review committee in the light of formation of Sixth Pay Commission, merger of 50 per cent of DA in basic pay for college teachers in Karnataka, and democratisation of university and college governance.

Bijapur Staff Correspondent reports: Various trade unions and other associations in Bijapur have supported the general strike called by the central committee of trade unions on Thursday. Communist Party of India (Marxist) district unit secretary Annaraya Iligera; Karnataka Prantha Raitha Sangha district unit president and Government Employees' Association district unit chief C.S. Lendi; Janwadi Mahila Sanghatane district unit chief Lakshmi Mailariu and KSRTC Employees Union's district unit president D.H. Mullah said the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government at the Centre had been pursuing the anti-poor and anti-worker policies. The State Government had been following pro-capitalist policies, they said. While claiming the support of many other organisations for the general strike, they said a procession and "rasta roko" would be held on Thursday.
