ON A GROWTH PATH: A view of the Vasavadatta Cement plant in Sedam.
GULBARGA: Vasavadatta Cements, a unit of the Kesoram Industries, a premier cement manufacturing unit, has set itself a target of more than doubling the production of clinker and cement after the inauguration of its fourth unit on the outskirts of Sedam in Gulbarga district in August. A spokesperson of the company told The Hindu here that the production capacity of the Sedam plant, which was 4.1 million tonnes now, would be increased to 9.1 million tonnes after the inauguration of the fourth unit in August next year. He said work on the new unit was in advanced stage of completion. The production of the clinker would be increased from 3.3 million tonnes per year now to 6 million tonnes per year. The third unit of the Sedam plant was inaugurated in October this year. Vasavadatta Cements has been awarded ISO 9001, 14001 and IS 18001 certificates. The Sedam plant produced three grades of cement including 53 graded Vasavadatta Gold, 43 graded Vasavadatta Super and Birla Shakti Portland pozzolona cement using the fly ash. The spokesperson said the limestone deposits in its Injepalli captive limestone mine could last six decades. The factory proposed to increase the present captive generation of power from 43.2 MW to 73.2 MW by installing the fourth captive power generation unit. At present, 25.2 MW of power was generated in Plants 1 and II and the third unit of the captive power plant was in advanced stage of execution to produce an installed capacity of 18 MW. He said the water requirement of the plant was met from the Kagina and Kamalavati barrage across the Kamalavathi built by the factory. For the expansion plans of the plant, additional water would be drawn from the Kagina, Kamalavathi Barrage and mine and rainwater pits in the plant. To a question, he said the factory bought coal from Singareni Collieries and Western Coal fields. The existing manpower in the plant was around 1,300, including contract labour and an additional 150 persons would be employed after the expansion. He said care had been taken to maintain the standards stipulated to protect environment. Of the capital cost of Rs. 575 crores of the factory, the factory would spend Rs. 28 crore for implementing environmental management plans.
