Chennai: Tamil Nadu drew tamely with Haryana, which took two first innings points, in the Ranji Elite A match at the M.A. Chidambaram stadium on Tuesday. Assigned a target of 314 in a maximum of 41 overs, Tamil Nadu decided against mounting a chase, and finished on 52 for one off 27 — the match was called off just short of the mandatory overs.

Tamil Nadu's batsmen stepped out an hour before tea and almost immediately S. Anirudha was run out, albeit in unlucky circumstances. Coming down the wicket, he was caught outside his crease with his body leaning forward in follow-through, as the ball sprung off silly point and went to the keeper.

M. Vijay played some classy shots square of the wicket and even hammered a straight six — clearly he possesses the talent to develop into a decent opener for Tamil Nadu — but this innings was about survival and getting batting practice, not laying the foundation for an improbable win.

Earlier, Haryana galloped along to 195 and declared a little after captain Joginder Sharma's entertaining cameo of 25 (28b, 2x6, 1x4) had come to an end. The knock included an impressive six, hit inside out, off Jesuraj. Tamil Nadu's bowlers didn't look like running through the batting line-up in this innings either.

Off-spinner R. Ashwin did drift one cunningly into opener Sumit Sharma, who, wanting nothing to do with it, left it and was bowled; but that was the one bright spot all morning.
