Vishwa Hindu Sammelan

MANGALORE: The Vishwa Hindu Parishat is organising the third "Vishwa Hindu Sammelan" at Allahabad coinciding with the holy occasion of "Ardh Kumbh" in February 2007. More than three lakh delegates, including religious leaders, from over 100 countries are expected to attend the three-day meet from February 11. The previous Vishwa Hindu Sammelans were organised in 1966 and 1979, respectively. Prakash Sharma, national convener of Bajrang Dal, told presspersons here on Tuesday that the sammelan also coincided with the birth centenary year of "Guruji" Golwalkar, the second sarasangachalak of Rashtriya Swayam Sevak Sangh. Mr. Sharma said the VHP and its affiliates would undertake awareness campaign about the sammelan. — Staff Correspondent

Rail blockade

BANGALORE: The Akhila Karnataka Gadi Horata Samithi has given a call for blocking movement of trains across the State on January 21, in support of various demands of Kannada organisations. Samithi president and MLA Vatal Nagaraj said here on Tuesday that the movement of trains would be blocked from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. The samithi has urged Union Government to accord classical language status to Kannada and the State Government to implement the Sarojini Mahishi Committee, the Baragur Ramachandrappa Committee and the Vatal Nagaraj Committee reports in toto. — Staff Reporter

Jet Airways flight

Bangalore: Jet Airways will launch direct flights from Delhi and Kolkata to Bangkok, from January 23. With approval from the Union Government, Jet will soon have two daily flights to Bangkok, operated with new Boeing 737-800 aircraft. With the induction of these aircraft, the airline's fleet size will go up to 59, according to a release. — Special Correspondent

Award

BANGALORE: Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy will present the "Rashtrakavi" award to veteran poet G.S. Shivarudrappa here on Friday. According to a press release, the award will be presented at a function to be held at Ravindra Kalakshetra at 4.30 p.m. Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa will preside over the function. Kannada Development Authority Chairman Siddalingaiah will deliver the felicitation address. Singers Archana Udupa, Divya Raghavan, Supriya Acharya, Pancham Halibandi, Ravi Muroor and Ajay Wariar will render the poems written by Dr. Shivarudrappa. Artistes will perform a ballet, Suvarna Vaibhava, under Maya Rao's direction. There will be an exhibition of Dr. Shivarudrappa's books and rare photographs, the release said. — Staff Reporter

Protest threatened

Bangalore: Slum Dwellers of Koramangala in Bangalore, who have not received possession certificates due to them, from the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP), have threatened to stage protests if the civic body did not take any action in this regard within a week, Koramangala Slum Development Committee has said in a press release. The BMP Council, on November 26, 1989, had passed a resolution stating that slum dwellers in four slums at Koramangala (Rajendra Nagar, Ambedkar Nagar, Laxman Rau Nagar and Shastri Nagar) could be given ownership of the houses they stayed in at a nominal rate of Rs. 500. It repeated the resolution in 1998. But until now, nothing has been done. — Staff Reporter

Stray dogs savage abandoned baby

BIJAPUR: An abandoned newborn girl was set upon by stray dogs, adjacent to the city municipal council building here on Tuesday.

Onlookers saw two dogs fighting for the body and pulling it in opposite directions. Some of the onlookers chased away the animals but not before the dogs had torn away a hand and some flesh from the baby's abdomen. It was not clear whether the baby was alive when the dogs savaged it. The police from nearby the Gandhi Chowk station rushed to the spot and took the body to government hospital for post-mortem. — Staff Correspondent

Insurance scheme for shepherds

Bangalore: The Government will introduce "Janasree Kuri Yojana," an insurance scheme for shepherds, in the last week of December, Minister for Animal Husbandry Revu Naik has said. He told presspersons here on Tuesday that the beneficiaries would be shepherds living below the poverty line. The Government would pay an insurance premium of Rs. 57 for a sheep and the farmer concerned would have to pay Rs. 10.

In the event of death of an insured sheep, the owner would get a compensation of Rs. 1,500. — Special Correspondent

Farm policy to be released tomorrow

HOSPET: Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy will release the new agriculture policy on Thursday, according to Home Minister M.P. Prakash. The new policy lays stress on bringing in reforms, natural farming, extending subsidies and promoting the cultivation of oilseeds and pulses. — Staff Correspondent

Acharya's condition improving

Manipal: The condition of Medical Education Minister V.S. Acharya, who was admitted to Kasturba Hospital here on Monday after he collapsed due to exhaustion, is improving.

"Dr. V.S. Acharya is improving. He is fine. His blood pressure is normal. His blood sugar count is almost normal. His medical parameters are within the normal limits. He has been put in the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital for 48 hours. He will be shifted to the ward on Wednesday," Pro-Chancellor of the Manipal Academy of Higher Education H.S. Ballal told The Hindu on Tuesday. — Staff Correspondent

Bangalore: The Karnataka State Government Employees Federation has extended support to the December 14 strike by employees of the Union Government, State Governments and banking and insurance organisations, a statement issued by federation president U.D. Power shutdown

HUBLI: Owing to work on charging underground power cable network the following areas in Hubli will have no power supply on Wednesday between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., Hubli Electricity Supply Company has said in a release.

The areas affected are Shantinagar Church, Banashankari Layout, Ambikanagar, Mahaveer Colony, Haliyal Layout, Nagashettikoppa, Bengeri, Khadi Gramodyog, Venkatesh Colony, Sai Layout, Siddaramanagar, Gopanakoppa, Devangapet, Udayanagar, Shivagiri Colony, Golden Park, Silver Park, Rajajinagar and surrounding areas. — Staff Correspondent

Minister's visit

DHARWAD: Shashikanth Naik, Minister for Horticulture, will visit Hubli on Wednesday. The Minister will arrive at Hubli by Rani Channamma Express Train and leave for Ambadagatti village in Bailhongal taluk of Belgaum district at 7 a.m. He will return in the evening to catch the train to Bangalore, according to a release. — Staff Correspondent

Stoppage facility

HUBLI: South Western Railway has decided to provide temporary two-minute stoppage facility at Sanvordem Curchorem Station on Hubli division for Howrah-Vasco-Howrah Super Fast Express Trains (2828/ 2847) for three months. The facility will be provided till March 8. Accordingly train number 2828 will reach Sanvordem Curchorem station at 8.28 a.m. and leave from there at 8.30 a.m. on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday. In the return direction train number 2847 will arrive at the station at 1.13 p.m. and depart from there at 1.15 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, the release said. — Staff Correspondent

Seized

HUBLI: Hubli Police have seized spirit worth Rs. 60,000 that was being transported illegally allegedly for manufacture of illicit liquor and have arrested three persons. In a release, the police have given the name of the arrested as Srikanth N. Bakale and Balaraj S. Kabade of Gadag and Aravind S. Angadi of Dharwad. MYSORE: Home Guards' Day was observed by the District Commandant of the Home Guards on the Fire Force Parade Grounds in Saraswathipuram on Monday. After unfurling the flag and receiving the guard of honour, retired commandant of Home Guards M. MYSORE: The State Committee of Kadamba Sainya has condemned the decision of the Railway Board to have destination boards on trains only in Hindi and English. State president Ramesh in a release here on Tuesday criticised the special allowance made for trains from Tamil Nadu and urged political parties to lodge their protest against the injustice done to Karnataka. — Staff Correspondent

Stolen jewellery recovered

BELLARY: Gandhinagar police have arrested one person and have recovered gold ornaments estimated at Rs. 1 lakh from him. The arrest has solved five theft cases reported in the city. The name of the arrested is given as Bhaskar (32), resident of Srirampur Colony in the city, according to a police press release. — Staff Correspondent

Samajwadi Party holds protest

GULBARGA: The Samajwadi Party on Tuesday organised a "rasta roko" agitation near Lalgiri Cross in the city for more than an hour demanding basic amenities and regular supply of drinking water. Foundation stone laid for complex

BIJAPUR: Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Mohsin laid the foundation stone for a mutton market building near Gandhi Chowk here on Tuesday. The 52-stall market is being built at a cost of Rs. 50 lakh. Municipal Commissioner L. Sonnegowda said priority would be given to those who had mutton shops in the old market while distributing stalls in new market. BIJAPUR: The Vipra (Brahmin) Kalyana Trust here and Infosys Foundation have extended financial assistance of over Rs. 3 lakh to meritorious students, women and widows and the sick from poor families.
