Pandit Shivanand Patil

HUBLI: The Mumbai-based Hindustani vocalist Pandit Shivanand Patil has been selected for the first Srimati Krishna Hangal Memorial National Award instituted by the Hangal Music Foundation.

Addressing presspersons here on Tuesday, the nonagenarian vocalist Gangubai Hangal, and Manoj Hangal and Baburao Hangal, founder and president respectively of the Hangal Music Foundation, said the award, instituted in memory of the vocalist Krishna Hangal, would be conferred annually on a vocalist from either the Hindustani or Carnatic styles. The award ceremony would be held either at the end of September or October, they said.

Mr. Baburao Hangal said the award would be given to vocalists in the age group of 35 to 50 who had made a name for themselves at the national level in classical and semi-classical music. The award comes with a purse of Rs. 10,000, a memento and a citation.

The first award presentation ceremony would be held at Sawai Gandharva Hall in Hubli on December 16 in the presence of Sri Gurusiddha Rajayogindra Swamiji and Sri Chandrashekar Swamiji of Hubli, he said.

Mr. Manoj Hangal said it would be followed by a musical tribute to Krishna Hangal by Balesh, a disciple of Ustad Bismillah Khan. B. Krishna, son of Balesh, would also perform. The award-winner Pt. Shivanand Patil and the local vocalist Jnaneshwhar Warang would give a performance, he said.

Pt. Shivanand Patil, now based in Mumbai, is a native of Ankali in Belgaum district.

Pt. Shivanand Patil has received several awards and titles, including the Rajyotsava Award in 2002. He is also involved in theatre activities.
