MANGALORE: Students covered by "Akshara Dasoha" mid-day meal scheme may soon be provided with milk as well, B. Nagaraj Shetty, Minister for Fisheries, Endowment and district in-charge said here on Tuesday. A proposal in this regard would be placed before the State cabinet for approval, he said. Inaugurating "Nandini on-the-spot painting competition", organised by Dakshina Kannada Cooperative Milk Producers' Union Limited (DKMUL), Mr. Shetty said milk would be a wholesome supplement in the Akshara Dasoha menu. Besides, it makes sense to introduce products such as milk and buttermilk to students, and wean them away from aerated and bottled drinks.
Justifies price hike
Referring to the decision by Karnataka Milk Federation to increase the price of Nandini milk, marketed by the federation and its constituent milk unions across the State by Re. 1 from Friday, Mr. Shetty said it would help farmers in the dairy sector. Although the consumer might bear the brunt of this hike, it would give a big boost to the dairying activity, which is the mainstay of rural economy, he said. M. Maheshwar Rao, Deputy Commissioner, who was the chief guest, said such events gave students an opportunity to display their inherent talent.
"Diversify"
Noting that the union was in the forefront of dairying in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts, Mr. Rao advised them to diversify and adopt technological changes to face the challenges posed by liberalisation of economy in the sector. K. Diwakar Shetty, president, DKMUL, who presided over the function, said the union was paying highest procurement price to farmers in the State. He said the competition was organised as part the union's marketing strategy.A.M. Shivakumar, managing director, and T. Kumaraswamy, manager, were present.
